CSUN is setting the standard in sustainability practice with the launch of the Institute for Sustainability in 2008. Under the Institute, the university opened the first-ever Sustainability Center in the California State University system. The Institute of Sustainability is an example of how CSUN rises above, pioneering discovery and innovation in sustainability across disciplines in the areas of curriculum, education, research, and community engagement.
Leading an integrated approach to sustainability requires nothing less than breakthrough thinking from multiple disciplines working toward common goals. The Institute engages all colleges to increase interdisciplinary and cross-functional communication, education, and research on sustainability. The Institute cultivates innovation and education in regenerative urban farming, aquaculture, biodiversity, and sustainable fashion career pathways. We operate the campus food garden, a regenerative orchard, and a vertical hydroponic food farm, which serve as tools to educate campus and community members on the benefits of sustainable urban agriculture. Our programs position students to transform their own communities through sustainable practices.

Vertical Hydroponic Food Farm
Help us operate this 10’ by 40’ vertical hydroponic farm, which generates 2 acres of produce for food insecure CSUN Students and staff, and allows campus partners to conduct experiments in urban agriculture. Your support will help staff a manager to train and supervise students/volunteers and coordinate production and projects
Sustainable Fashion Academy
Help establish and expand this program, which helps students earn a “sustainable fashion” certificate, putting CSUN on the sustainable fashion map and building a pipeline to the LA fashion industry.
IS General Operations
With your support, we will be able to fund innovative sustainability research projects, increase the number of paid student fellowships, and amplify our projects into surrounding communities.
