Marine and Tropical Biology Support

The Tropical Biology Semester is a great experience to expose students to the biology of the Neotropics by visiting the major ecosystems/plant communities of Ecuador. Three courses and a seminar address biodiversity, zoology, ecology, and conservation by integrating a strong field component with lectures, labs, and discussions of relevant literature. Students conduct field projects that incorporate experimental design, field techniques, data analysis, and present information as a scientific paper and as a poster. We estimate the cost between $5000 and $6000 per student which includes airfare, in-country transportation, and room and board.

The Marine Biology Semester program provides an intensive undergraduate exposure to marine biology, and is designed for students with a serious commitment to environmental and marine science. The program is based at the Wrigley Marine Science Center (WMSC), situated on Santa Catalina Island, 26 miles from Los Angeles, CA. This location provides access to beautiful, pristine marine habitats and breathtaking island views. WMSC is owned and operated by the University of Southern California (USC), and the program is being offered through the California State Universities, affiliated with the Ocean Studies Institute (OSI) and the Southern California Marine Institute (SCMI). Students spend 15 weeks on Santa Catalina Island in newly-renovated dormitory and laboratory facilities. Residency at this marine laboratory provides ready access to an invigorating educational environment that provides both state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and ready access to a diversity of marine habitats. All courses provide a strong element of hands-on field experience, which provides the comprehensive training that can help in career choices and graduate decisions.

Currently we have a limited grant program for students who cannot afford these vital programs. But current funds do not meet the needs of our students. Help us today by contributing to these transformative and hands-on experiential programs and help every eligible student have this opportunity to learn first-hand the skills they’ll need to be successful.
