The goal of the Math Department Mentoring and Advising Program is to increase the number of underrepresented minority students from our region who enter Ph.D. programs in the Mathematical Sciences, as well as to improve the quality of mathematical education provided to them prior to the Ph.D. program. In our experience there are many bright students who, given the appropriate training, academic attention and encouragement — and financial assistance — will become excellent candidates for a Ph.D. program in Mathematics. Every academic year, we encounter some freshmen in our lower-division classes who have very raw mathematical talent and curiosity, and whose desire for learning math is visible. With the appropriate economic and logistical resources, our faculty will guide such students through their undergraduate studies and help them acquire the appropriate mathematics background and skills to achieve a college degree in Mathematics and later a smooth transition into a well-respected Ph.D. program. Your financial support means more students succeed.
