At California State University, Northridge (CSUN), sustainability is more than a goal—it's a shared commitment across the university. The Institute for Sustainability is committed to engagement and outreach across campus in the larger San Fernando Valley. We are built on the idea that interdisciplinary collaboration taps the creativity of people and places. At CSUN, sustainability means action, innovation, and community impact.
The Institute engages faculty, staff and students to increase interdisciplinary and cross-functional communication, education, and research on sustainability. We cultivate innovation and education across a variety of topics including sustainable food systems, community resilience, energy, fire management, ecological workforce development, and art, culture and sustainability.
We operate the campus food garden, a regenerative orchard, and a vertical hydroponic food farm, which serve as tools to educate campus and community members on the benefits of sustainable urban agriculture. Our programs position students to transform their own communities through sustainable practices.A gift to the Institute of Sustainability furthers the university’s commitment to the planet and to its students as they realize new and innovative career paths. Create sustainable communities with a gift that endures generations. Your support of the Institute for Sustainability will help fund projects like:
Orange Grove Support
Donate to the Orange Grove Fund to help us support fun events and activities to bring CSUN students and local community members into the historic CSUN Orange Grove to celebrate the agricultural history of our region and to engage with a unique environment, reflective of historic culture.
Vertical Hydroponic Food Farm & CSUN G.A.R.D.E.N.
Help us to feed more students at CSUN! Through our on campus CSUN G.A.R.D.E.N and our hydroponic food farm we have the ability to teach vocational skills to students and community members. A gift to the Institute for Sustainability will help to support operation of our 10’ by 40’ vertical hydroponic farm, which generates 2 acres of produce for food insecure CSUN Students and staff, and allows campus partners to conduct experiments in urban agriculture. Your support will help staff a manager to train and supervise students/volunteers and coordinate production and projects.
Community Engagement
A gift to the Institute for Sustainability will support our outreach and engagement to members of the larger CSUN community geographically located in the San Fernando Valley.
