Students in the College of Engineering and Computer Science have numerous leadership opportunities including the following, non-academic program specific, student groups, many with a national presence:
Leaders in Engineering and Computer Science (LECS) is a student leader council at CSUN that recognizes the necessity to develop a unified and comprehensive representation of students and organizations in the College of Engineering and Computer Science (CECS). Our purpose is providing professional advancement for students of Engineering and Computer Science, by providing programs that promote the CECS as a whole. We focus on the improvement of service to, and advancement of, the students and student organizations of Engineering and Computer Science. LECS is a liaison between the students and the organizations in the administrations of the College of Engineering and Computer Science and Associated Students.
The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) is a transformative organization committed to empowering Black students, who have limited resources, with the tools and opportunities they need to thrive in the engineering field. Our mission is to increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community. Through strategic partnerships with leading companies, NSBE fosters an environment of professional growth by hosting impactful initiatives, including informational sessions, skill-building workshops, and mock interviews. Our hallmark events—two annual conventions—provide unparalleled opportunities for our members to access financial and academic support, secure internships, and even land full-time positions with top organizations. Your support and contributions enable NSBE to expand its reach, empowering more Black engineering students on campus and beyond to break barriers, realize their potential, and shape a more inclusive future in STEM. Together, we can make a profound difference.
SAE – Society of Automotive Engineers is a collegiate design series created to prepare students for future employment as engineers. Students act as an engineering company designing, fabricating, testing, and competing a prototype vehicle. This in-depth and hands-on educational program develops the knowledge, creativity, and problem-solving abilities of engineering students by enabling them to draw upon their years of education to answer a complex, real-world design and manufacturing challenge.
SHPE – Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers is committed to changing lives in the Southern California area through STEM-oriented community programs. As role models in our communities, we aim to inspire and mold future leaders. Through the use of awareness and dismantling stigmas, we see STEM as a gateway to an attainable future, free of negative socio-economic factors.
SWE – Society of Women Engineers is a chapter of women engineers at CSUN that knows a woman is more than a diversity quota: she is a necessary and viable asset in all science, technology, engineering, and math-driven fields.
CSUN SWE strives to empower women to achieve their goals along their respective career paths and be the driving force that establishes these careers as highly desirable for women. SWE recognizes the achievements of women within these traditionally male dominated fields and challenge negative perceptions against girls and women in STEM fields
Your support for our student programs keeps these organizations thriving for Matadors now and in the future.
