Funding for the Black Scholars Matter (BSM) Program’s Cultural Immersion Study-Away Travel Series will support scholars in the BSM program as they participate in experiential learning activities and travel to a series of cultural centers and museums in Los Angeles, (California African American Museum - CAAM), San Francisco (Museum of the African Diaspora), South Carolina (International African American Museum) and Washington D.C. (The National Museum of African American History and Culture - NMAAHC).
Students will participate in immersive tours at each site, which are considered high-impact educational practices. The active engagement, intentional dialogue and research conducted at the museum/centers will assist scholars in broadening their perspective and heightening their awareness of the rich contributions of African American/Black history and culture. Students will develop a more nuanced understanding of their own cultural heritage, of different people/culture, as well as learn valuable skills and knowledge they can apply in their educational journey and in the workplace.
Studying away can be a life-changing, transformative experience – one that expands cultural awareness, increased self-efficacy, and the development of life-long skills, including resilience, creativity and enhanced personal and professional growth.
