The Mack I. Johnson Memorial Research Award for Outstanding Graduate Student was established in 2012 by Gail Johnson to honor the memory of her husband. Dr. Mack I. Johnson was Associate Vice President of Graduate Studies and Research, and International Programs, as well as a professor in the Department of Biology. Professor Johnson worked at CSUN for 25 years, and was a passionate supporter of research excellence. His compassion for students made him well known around campus, adding to his many academic administration accomplishments. He was one of the most beloved mentors and administrators at CSUN, as well as dearly respected for his integrity and fairness.
The Johnson Award is the most prestigious award given to a graduate student in the College of Science and Mathematics. The award is presented annually to an outstanding graduate student who has demonstrated extraordinary research abilities and who has been accepted into a Ph.D. program. The award recipient receives $2,000, a certificate, and their name on a permanent plaque displayed in the College of Science and Mathematics Dean’s office. Additionally, the are recognized during spring Commencement activities.
